Prepare a clean backup, separate your saves, and record your version before beginning.

## Protect your original files

Keep an untouched copy of your legally obtained ROM and the patch files. Follow the instructions included with the release, and never overwrite your only working copy.

Store the patched game, backups, and save files separately. Add a short note with the version label and source so you know exactly what you are playing if you need help later.
